Day 1 at CHET and it has certainly been a busy one. After arriving and enjoying our lunches, we headed into the woods to tackle the orienteering course. The children completed a range of obstacles and it was wonderful to see so many of them conquer their fear of heights by taking part on the zip…

Year 5 have been exploring the issue of road safety.

The children discussed,  ‘How can we keep ourselves safe on the roads?’

We looked at the work of Emily Brooke and her invention, ‘Blaze - The Ultimate Light.’

We then designed posters explaining how the products keep cyclists…

This week the children have been learning about multiples and factors.

We explored the different ways we can identify a multiple of 2,3,4 and 5.

This week, Year 5 has been exploring poetry focusing on the poem ‘Jinnie Ghost.’ 

In groups, the children looked at different images related to the poem and selected vocabulary that would fit each one. We discussed the poems use of similes, repetition and choice of verbs.

To consolidate our learning on addition and subtraction we played in pairs a game of Tic-Tac-Toe.

To place their counter the children had to solve an addition or subtraction.

This week the children created Danish open sandwiches.

Working in pairs, they carefully tasted and selected the ingredients to use for their own sandwich.

We then evaluated our sandwiches for taste and what we would change.

We have been exploring copyright. As a class discussed what copyright is and why it is important.

The children created posters explaining what is copyright as well as the terms public domain and fair use.

The children have worked in small groups to recount Annie’s journey in her barrel as she approaches the end of the falls.

We focused on summarising the key events as well as thinking about how Annie would have felt at each stage. 

Today we have been discussing, ‘Why are our diets so different?‘

In small groups we worked together to create flatbreads using flour, salt, olive oil and cold water.

The children enjoyed working in groups and mixing the ingredients and kneading the dough.

During this term we have been looking at the work of Freidensreich Hundertwasser. 

Using his paintings as our inspiration we designed and painted our own versions of his work.

In this lesson we explored using hieroglyphics as musical symbols.

After listening to The Bangles, ‘Walk like an Egyptian’, we discussed what symbols would be suitable to go along with the song.

In pairs, we created our own composition using hieroglyphics and selected suitable sounds to go…

In this lesson, we looked at the different ways and reasons why children are measured and weighed.

As a class, we measured our hands spans and then took an average for the class, boys and girls.

Our conclusion was, ‘the larger the handspan, the taller the person.’
